The British pop star tells Marie Davies about her collaboration with Lipsy and where she likes to shop on the high street

How did the collaboration with women’s young fashion brand Lipsy come about?
I’ve always wanted to have a fashion line as I’m really into clothes and fashion, like most girls my age. Lipsy is a well-known brand that girls identify with and it has a broad reach around the UK. I thought it would be great to collaborate with a brand which could make the collection accessible to many people.

How much involvement do you have in the design process?
I tried on lots of samples and looked through colour sheets and fabrics for the spring 10 collection which is in store this month. We only started working on it at the beginning of 2010 so it was a very quick process. For the second collection in autumn 10, I’ll be drawing sketches and looking at my clothes at home. I customise pieces myself so I’ll be taking all of that in for inspiration. I’ll have a better idea about what I want and will be able to learn from the first collection.

What type of pieces are in the summer collection?
There are two themes – Pixie Party and Pixie Festival. Pixie Festival has cotton dresses, bleached denim and fringed waistcoats. Pixie Party includes animal prints and embellishment on chiffon dresses and studded vest dresses. Being young, I love festivals and partying so it’s great that there are some day dresses and evening dresses in there.

Where do you shop for clothes?
I like high fashion, so Balenciaga, Chanel and Fendi are favourites of mine. I was lucky enough to perform at Fendi’s Paris catwalk, which was amazing. On the high street I’ll go to Topshop and Urban Outfitters, and I love vintage stores such as Absolute Vintage in Shoreditch and Mint Vintage in Covent Garden.

How do you think the high street could better cater for the young fashion market?
I think the mix on the high street is really interesting right now. The collaborations with designers like Henry Holland for Designers at Debenhams and Christopher Kane for Topshop are fantastic. It makes high fashion accessible for young people who have less of a budget – it lets them buy into a brand.

What are the most important things to remember when designing fashion for young women?
Always make it fun, fresh and young. It’s important for the clothing to be aspirational to girls who want to look fashionable, while still making it appropriate for the right age group.

How many seasons will your collaboration with Lipsy run for? And do you have any plans to set up your own brand?
The Lipsy collection will run throughout 2010,so there will be spring 10 and autumn 10 collections. There are no plans to extend it at the moment. I’d love to have my own brand but it’s a big commitment. It’s definitely something I would consider, although not at the moment. But we will see.

What item of clothing do you wear the most?
My Fendi boots. I live in them when I go out. They’re really high!

Who most inspires your style?
[1960s actress and model] Edie Sedgwick. I love her fashion and big black eyes. Also, [actress] Brigitte Bardot was beautiful with her glamorous blonde hair.

Which fashion designers do you admire?
Karl Lagerfeld. His collections (autumn 10, pictured) are always stylish and beautifully made.

Since the release of her debut single, 'Mama Do' back in June 2009, Pixie Lott has lead on to become one of the biggest UK female solo artists of the contemporary music landscape. Pixie's debut album, 'Turn It Up' has spanned sales close to one million in the UK alone, producing a successive number of Top 20 singles, including two #1 hits to her name. She has received numerous accolades and has also earned herself a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Pixie is also a well-renowned songwriter, producing hits for artists such as Alexandra Burke and Selena Gomez, to name but a few. Pixie also starred as Judy in Nickelodeon's 'Fred: The Movie' and is rumoured to be lined up for more movie roles in the future. Pixie is also a prolific fashion icon, working closely alongside high street chain Lipsy to create her own collections. With her sophomore album due in November this year and a new fashion range available soon, there's no stopping Pixie and her inimitable talent.
Pixie has recently become a patron of CRY, a charity which offers support and awareness of cardiac risk in the young. Speaking about the charity, Pixie has said, "I've become a patron of CRY as it affects so many young people and it's crazy that a seemingly fit and young person can just drop down dead. I feel it's important to raise awareness and will be using my new role to spread the word." To find out more, or donate to CRY, then visit their website now.
